Excellent Coffee In A Quiet Retreat in East Memphis

Noticing on my Yelp app that there was a new coffee bar in East Memphis called The Hub, I finally decided last week to get over there to try it. With an address of 6000 Briarcrest Avenue (the former Briarcrest High School), I wondered if the coffee bar was located in a church, although their online presence clearly avoided mentioning any religious connections. As it turned out, The Hub is indeed part of the campus of High Point Church, but it seems to have something of an independent existence. On any given afternoon, the stark, modern space is full of people enjoying lattes and working busily on laptops. A large meeting room with a conference table and walls emblazoned with inspirational slogans is located at the back of the room, and slogans about Memphis adorn other walls of the shop. Rather than contemporary Christian music, the song playing over the speakers when I entered was Prince’s “Purple Rain.”
I ordered a latte, and was quite pleased with what I got. The service is cheerful, and The Hub serves coffees from Fayetteville, Arkansas’ Onyx Coffee Lab and Toronto’s De Mello Palheta Coffee Roasters, so your cup tastes great. Altogether, The Hub would probably become my go-to for great coffee were it not for one unfortunate fact- their hours are curtailed, likely because they are located in a church. They close at 7 PM Monday through Saturday, which is just a little too early for a coffee bar in a big city like Memphis, and on Sundays they close at 1 PM. Still, when I can manage to get through there at times when they are open, I will certainly return.
